The Old Fortress of Corfu

Standing atop a peninsula, the Old Fortress is the first sight of Corfu for visitors arriving on the island by ferry. The construction of this imposing monument started during Byzantine times, when Corfiots were forced to find a shelter after the destruction of the ancient city by the Ostrogoths, but was completed by during the Venetian rule (1386 - 1797), when Venetians used it to defend the city from the Turks.

In front of the Old Fortress, you can see the famous statue of Johann Matthias von der Schulenberg, the German commander who played a pivotal role in saving Corfu from the Turkish siege in 1716. You can enter the fortress through a small bridge crossing a small artificial moat - Kontra Fossa- which was created to seperate the fortress from the city and protect the city further. 

Once inside the Fortress, you will discover interesting monuments including the ruins of the British military hospital, now housing the Music school; the English Barracks, now home to the Public Library; a small museum housing a Byzantine collection of sculptures and icons; and the beautiful Saint George church, which was also built by the British in the 19th century. Apart from sightseeing, you can visit the cafe of the Old Fortress, enjoy a lunch in the relaxing,  seaside restaurant, or attend one of the cultural events held in its premises including music concerts and art exhibitions. (entrance fee: 6 euros). Take the time to also climb to the top of the fortress to enjoy some of the best views of Corfu Town! This imposing monument is located on the east side of Corfu Town and is only a few minutes walk from other attractions of Corfu Town like Spianada Square, Palace of St. Michael and St. George and Liston.
