Leave Corfu port behind and set off on a Private Shore Excursion to uncover the charms of the beautiful Corfu Town and its surroundings!
Kick off your tour with a visit to the district of Kanoni, once the capital of the island of Corfu! Here you will get the opportunity to enjoy the magnificent views of Vlacherna's monastery and the world-famous Mouse Island! According to a legend, Mouse Island was formed when Poseidon - God of the sea - turned Odysseus's ship to stone. After pausing to capture the breathtaking views, hop back on your air-conditioned vehicle and drive to the next stop: the Mon Repos Palace, located in Paleopolis, the site of the ancient city of Corfu.
The Palace of Mon Repos, surrounded by extensive public gardens, was built by the British governor of the Ionian Islands, Frederik Adams as a gift to his wife Nina Palatianou in 1824. For over a hundred years it was the summer retreat of the Greek royal family, but today it is publicly owned and has become a museum. Explore the wonderful gardens filled with ruins from the ancient city of Corfu that have been discovered by archaeologists during the excavations and can be witnessed on the grounds. Visit the beautiful rooms of the Palace restored to their former glory and containing period furniture, dresses and paintings of Corfu, as well as many artefacts discovered from the ancient Greek, Roman and Byzantine settlements here. One interesting but little-known fact is that Prince Philip, husband of Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain was born in Mon Repos Palace in 1921.
Leave the Palace behind and enjoy the short drive through Garitsa Bay, to your next stop, the charming Corfu Town! The historic Corfu Town centre, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, invites visitors to wander through its charming cobblestoned streets, pause to enjoy squares lined with historic buildings and marvel at the captivating architecture. Stroll along the wide pavement of the Liston, with its wonderful French-designed arcade housing numerous cafés and restaurants - a favourite spot for locals to meet and watch the world go by. Step inside the beautifully decorated St. Spyridon church, where the remains of the island’s patron saint are housed. Finally, enjoy some free time for shopping or sample the delectable Corfiot cuisine in a taverna nestled in the heart of the Old Town!
When your Corfu Private Shore Excursion ends, get back on your air-conditioned vehicle and return to Corfu port in good time for your departure!
