Start your tour with a visit to the district of Kanoni, once the capital of the island of Corfu. Here you will get the opportunity to enjoy the magnificent views of Vlacherna's monastery and the world famous Mouse Island. According to a legend, Mouse Island was formed when the ship that had taken Odysseus back to Ithaca, his home port, was turned into stone by Posidon - god of the sea- angry at being defied by the Phaeacians. After pausing to take photos, hop back in your air-conditioned coach and drive to our next stop: the Mon Repos Palace!
The Palace of Mon Repos, surrounded by extensive public gardens, was built by the British governor of the Ionian Islands, Frederik Adams as a gift to his wife Nina Palatianou in 1824. For over a hundred years it was the summer retreat of the Greek royal family, but today it is publicly owned and has become a museum. Visit the beautiful rooms of the Palace restored to their former glory and containing period furniture, dresses and paintings of Corfu, as well as many artefacts discovered from the ancient Greek, Roman and Byzantine settlements here. One interesting but little-known fact about Mon Repos Palace is that Prince Philip, husband of Great Britain's Queen Elizabeth II was born here. Leaving the Palace and after only a short drive through Garitsa Bay, we reach our next stop, the charming Corfu Town!
The historic Corfu Town centre, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, invites visitors to wander through its charming cobblestoned streets, pause to enjoy squares lined with historic buildings and marvel at the architecture. Stroll along the wide pavement of the Liston, with its wonderful French-designed arcade housing numerous cafés and restaurants – a favourite spot for locals to meet and watch the world go by.Step inside the beautifully decorated St. Spyridon church, where the remains of the island’s patron saint are housed. Finally, enjoy some free time for shopping or to take a snack or coffee at one of the many restaurants or cafés of the Old Town. Feeling refreshed, get back in your air-conditioned vehicle and return to Corfu port in good time for your departure!
